Fenn Family Moves to Chefoo China

One of the binders that Henry put together for his autobiography is entitled “Maverick 1907-08” Chefoo. In this binder he included typed up versions of letters he wrote to his parents while in school at Chefoo1. At this point Henry is 13 – 14 years old and is attending a Missionary School for boys. These letters begin while Henry is on his way to the school and span over about a month. In that month Henry wrote his parents what seems to be 8 letters, but the final letter does not appear in the collection, only the date “Mar 2”.

His first letter tells his mother about his trip to Chefoo, detailing many exciting events that happened, including dealing with drunken men on the train. Over the course of the month Henry tells his parents about his teachers, some of the friends he makes, and asks about his siblings. Through out the letters Henry mentions the religious aspects of attending a missionary school, as well he mentions a football game that his school played against a Christian missionary school.

While creating the Maverick binder Henry chose to type up these letters into a single document. They are a recount of his experiences of moving to and attending the school. By selecting to include these letters (and retyping them) Henry signaled that they were of importance to him.
