While at Wash U Henry was the acting chair of the department of Chinese and Japanese¹. In 1958 under the National Defense Education Act the department of Health, Education, and Welfare provided federal assistance to “academic language and area centers”². The goal of this was to incentive institutions to teach uncommonly taught languages, including Chinese. In 1965 Washington University St. Louis received $98,935².
