Institute For Far Eastern Languages

The Institute for far Eastern Languages was located at Yale University. Henry began teaching there in 1949. The Institute was established in 1943. In 1951 the US Air Force contracted Yale for training in Asian languages, including Chinese, for Cold War intelligence. Over 3,000 airmen completed training there. In 1965 the Institute was incorporated into the Universities department of East Asian languages. The Institute, with Henry’s help developed the “blitz” method for teaching Chinese. This is a method where students do not learn a language through translation but rather through immersion in the language1.
