Auburn, NY
While living in Auburn, NY, Henry attended Auburn High School from 1910-19121. While in High School Henry wrote many poems. Below are images from a book made by Henry, that contains some of his writing from this period of his life, including two poems.
I selected these two specifically. The first one was written for an application but is labeled rejection #1. It is not known if this is rejection was of Henry’s volition, saying he didn’t think it was good enough or if it was rejected in the application. The second poem was written the following year (1912) and is Ode. It is the only Ode in this collection of writing.
The book is bound in Chinese style string binding. The variability in pages, as can be seen below with the ode being pasted onto a page, indicates that this book was created from separate pieces of writing and was intended to bring them all together in one place rather than it being a book that was bound and then written in. It is not known when the book was bounded together, but it must have been after 1916, was this is the most recent date in the book1.

As Henry worked on his autobiography, he wrote short passages about certain stages of his life1. Below is the passage he wrote about his time in Auburn, NY. This passage gives direct insight into Henry’s view of this period of his life. He succeeded academically but struggled socially. It is not known exactly when this passage was written.
