Military Service

In his notes Henry says “when the war broke out in the spring, I couldn’t wait to get into the service…” 1 Henry joined the US Army in 1917, but he was discharged soon after (in 1918) due to being underweight. He had to then wait for the draft to rejoin the military. Below are scans of documents related to Henry’s military service. The first set of documents show Henry’s discharge from the Army1. The second document contains different cards from service, including his draft registration card and certification of vaccination for the typhoid vaccine 1. The third document is from the National Archives and is a record of service for Henry in the Pennsylvania War History Commission 2.
